So every time he was looking for something new to read, I'd say, "How about Dory?" You can imagine that it didn't take very many times before that got really old, like, "Really, Mom? Do you only have one book you can recommend?"įinally, with it's due date looming, I decided to just read it myself. I thought for sure it was a book Max would like. Sometimes it works, but, more often than I'd like to admit, it doesn't, and then I'm left with books like Dory Fantasmagory hanging out at our house for weeks until we finally use up all our library renewals and have to take them back.Īfter I read Dory and the Real True Friend for the Cybils, I went back and checked out the first one because I'd found the second one so funny and delightful. So, meanwhile, I choose my own books for them and then place them strategically around the house or make rather blatant suggestions. However, the library can be a very overwhelming place (I know that all too well myself), so if they don't have some sort of plan going in, they end up coming home with stuff that just sits untouched in the library basket because they weren't actually interested in reading it-they just wanted to choose something. Okay, so before you all think that I'm some extremely controlling mother who monitors every single word my children read, let me just defend myself by saying this: I am totally fine with letting my kids choose (some of) their own books.

Michel Pastoureau, a leading authority on medieval heraldry and professor of the history of colours and western symbols, tells us why. Thus stripes remain ambiguous, disapproved as much as valued, and capable of reversing themselves, like any social code. It requires a certain audacity, even a transgression against the most common custom, which at least confers the most elegant distinction on the one who dares : he attains chic. If we believe this slogan, wearing striped clothing is neither neutral nor natural. Several months ago, an advertising campaign displayed on the walls of the Paris métro proclaimed "This summer, dare to be stylish in stripes" (cet été, osez le chic des rayures). This book begins with a medieval scandal, and shows us how stripes have become a symbol of taste (chic) and even status. Calvin Coolidge's leadership provides urgent lessons for our age of exploding debt and government power. The autobiography offers great insight into the man and his philosophy. The New York Times called him 'the most literary man who has occupied the White House since 1865.' One biographer wrote that Coolidge's autobiography 'displays a literary grace that is lacking in most such books by former presidents.' The Coolidge who emerges in these pages is a model of character, principle, and humility - rare qualities in Washington. The man caricatured as 'Silent Cal' was a gifted writer. The Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge is as unjustly neglected as Calvin Coolidge himself. Now she presents an expanded and annotated edition of that president's masterful memoir. But that was before Fortune published an article by McLean that asked a seemingly innocent question: How exactly does Enron make money? From that point on, Enron's house of cards began to crumble. Today, Enron is the biggest business story of our time, and Fortune senior writers Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind are the new Woodward and Bernstein.Remarkably, it was just two years ago that Enron was thought to epitomize a great New Economy company, with its skyrocketing profits and share price. And thirty years later, if you're going to read only one book on Watergate, that's still the one. Unlike Baldwin, however, Coates views white supremacy as "an indestructible force, one that Black Americans will never evade or erase, but will always struggle against." The work takes structural and thematic inspiration from James Baldwin's 1963 epistolary book The Fire Next Time. Coates recapitulates American history and explains to his son "racist violence that has been woven into American culture." Coates draws from an abridged, autobiographical account of his youth in Baltimore, detailing his beliefs about what are the ways in which, to him, institutions like schools, the local police, and even "the streets" discipline, endanger, and threaten to "disembody" black men and women. It was written by Coates as a letter to his then-teenage son about his perception of what the feelings, symbolism, and realities associated with being Black in the United States are. 2015 book by Ta-Nehisi Coates Between the World and MeĪutobiography, American history, race relations īetween the World and Me is a 2015 nonfiction book written by American author Ta-Nehisi Coates and published by Spiegel & Grau.
